had a smash hit with The Jazz Singer, the first feature-length film with synchronized dialogue. I can think of no two more fitting swan songs for an art form that was-when these films premiered-already on its last breaths. Though I can't honestly claim there was much method in my madness, I think it's appropriate that Man with a Movie Cameraand this week's entry, Un Chien Andalou, are the last two silent films on my arbitrarily assembled syllabus. In this seventh entry in the series, I experience Un Chien Andalou (1929), a short cinematic fever dream from the minds of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. In “ Independent Study in World Cinema,” a self-educated film nerd attempts to fill in some fairly serious gaps in his self-education.

This choice is made from behind a "veil of ignorance", which prevents you from knowing your ethnicity, social status, gender and, crucially in Rawls' formulation, your or anyone else's idea of how to lead a good life. In the original position, you are asked to consider which principles you would select for the basic structure of society, but you must select as if you had no knowledge ahead of time what position you would end up having in that society. The phrases original position and veil of ignorance were coined by the American philosopher John Rawls, but the thought experiment itself was developed by William Vickrey and John Harsanyi in earlier writings. The original position ( OP), often referred to as the veil of ignorance, is a thought experiment used for reasoning about the principles that should structure a society based on mutual dependence. Rawls claims this will cause them to choose "fair" policies. Citizens making choices about their society are asked to make them from an "original position" of equality (left) behind a "veil of ignorance" (wall, center), without knowing what gender, race, abilities, tastes, wealth, or position in society they will have (right). A visual depiction of philosopher John Rawls' hypothetical veil of ignorance. American Mildred Harnack was a real figure in history who helped in the escape of German Jews and gave economic and military intelligence to Washington and Moscow. These women were educated, aware of their political community and had a strong desire to do the right thing. I have read a lot of historical fiction, but this group of women who were part of a resistance cell in Nazi Germany was a first for me. The women heroines begin the story on very different paths as their world begins to change, starting with the stock market crash. This is a book that is extremely detailed and well researched. Resistance Women by Jennifer Chiaverini begins in 1929 and takes us through 1946. Today, I’m joining TLC Book Tours and author Jennifer Chiaverini on the blog tour for the paperback release of Resistance Women. Cold in the South Pole is probably - and I am relying on my imagination here - like fire and knives combined. Cold like the South Pole is beyond cold such as what is found in your freezer. The continent thought, " well, I can't count on malaria and dengue to discourage visitors, let's mess with their minds directly through cold". Antarctica is the remotest, coldest, and loneliest place on earth. It is a direct, touching, and humane story of a self imposed exile to the South Pole for a woman who was a tough customer and who was adventurous to her bones. I took my time reading Jerri Nielsen's memoir. She and death went from this mortal world hand in hand. And though I was temporarily monumentally gutted about Nielsen dying as far back as in 2009, I was glad because she beat her cancer the first time around, and was ready for the cruel and fated rematch where the cancer took her on her terms. One of the first things I did when I read Ice Bound was to check on Nielsen's wiki page. Lewis George Orwell Mary Pope Osborne LeUyen Pham Dav Pilkey Roger Priddy Rick Riordan J. I mean, yes, Hester Fox’s novel has its faults. It set up a 401K and then invested in a robust stock portfolio. I might eventually forget what the book was even about, only to re-read the summary years down the road and think, “meh.” And maybe (just maybe), I’ll take it off my TBR altogether.ĭo not make this mistake. Newer, more interesting books take precedence. Normally, though, books like this languish on my TBR list, something I can never quite find the time (or interest) to read once it’s been published. Note: an eARC of this title was acquired via NetGalley.ĭo you ever read the summary of a book and think, “yeah, that sounds like something I would like”? That’s how I felt about The Witch of Willow Hall. For Willow Hall’s secrets will rise, in the end. All three daughters will be irrevocably changed by what follows, but none more than Lydia, who must draw on a power she never knew she possessed if she wants to protect those she loves. The estate seems sleepy and idyllic, but a subtle menace creeps into the atmosphere, remnants of a dark history that call to both Lydia and Emeline. The boy named Robert Carson loves gazing at that house, basking in its permanence and comfort. He is staring at the house where he lives: the great good Irish place of whitewashed walls, long and low, There he is, three days after his fifth birthday, standing barefoot upon wet summer grass. They gathered in secret, deep in the dripping glens, Chanting their prayers before a lichened rock. We took their temples from them and forbade them, for many years, to worship their strange idols. Hartright finds that Laura bears an astonishing resemblance to the woman in white, called Anne Catherick.
